Treatment Methods for The Different Stages Of Multiple Myeloma
The overgrowth of plasma cells in blood by producing abnormal proteins in called myeloma. It is a type of blood cancer where healthy blood cells that fight against infection-causing bacterias are outnumbered and overpowered by cancer cells. Plasma cells or white blood cells play an important role in strengthening our immune system. These cells are produced in the bone marrow and maintain healthy calcium levels in our bodies. Multiple myeloma is a disease that is often diagnosed at later stages as its symptoms are not evident in the early stages. There is no cure for this disease but it can be treated to ease the pain, discomfort, and to control the infection from spreading during survival. The best way to treat a patient during the different stages of multiple myeloma is through proper medication and a healthy diet.
Treatment methods for the different stages of multiple myeloma
Once a patient is diagnosed with multiple myeloma through symptoms and tests, doctors start their treatment to ease the pain and discomfort and to avoid complications caused by the disease.
Some of the common treatment methods for the different stages of multiple myeloma are:
- Targeted therapy
Medications such as ixazomib (Ninlaro), carfilzomib (Kyprolis), and bortezomib (Velcade) are given to patients orally or through an intravenous (IV) to target cancer cells and destroy them. This is done by blocking special proteins in the cancer cells. - Biological therapy
Certain medications such as lenalidomide (Revlimid), thalidomide (Thalomid), and pomalidomide (Pomalyst) are given to boost the performance of immune system cells which finds and destroys the cancer cells. These medications are taken orally. - Chemotherapy
This is treatment is given orally or through IV to stop the fast-growth of cancer cells by killing them. In the case of multiple myeloma, a high dosage of chemotherapy medications are given before surgery to transplant bone marrow. - Corticosteroids
Medications such as dexamethasone and prednisone help in adjusting the immune system to ease inflammation inside the body. These medications also act against myeloma cells. Corticosteroid medications are given through IV or as a pill. - Bone marrow transplant
This procedure is done to transplant the defected bone marrow with a healthy one. This process is also called a stem cell transplant. The transplant is done by collecting the infected blood-forming stem cells from the blood and is treated with high doses of chemotherapy medications and then it is injected back into the body to rebuild healthy bone marrow. - Radiation therapy
This a treatment in which the myeloma cells are shrunk in a particular area through radiation therapy. Powerful beams such as X-ray and protons are targeted at areas where tumors are formed to destroy and stop the growth of myeloma cells. This procedure helps in preventing bone damage and reduces pain extensively. - Diet
Yes, diet also plays an important role in minimizing the effects of multiple myeloma. Eating fiber-rich food, drinking lots of water and fluids, and avoiding junk food, meat, sugar, and alcohol can help in fighting multiple myeloma. Also, leading a healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly, and maintaining healthy body weight are other factors that help in improving the condition for multiple myeloma.
